John Vincent Barry (1903 - 1969) was both a member of the Victorian Bar and a judge
of the Supreme Court of Victoria. He was also a historian, criminologist and civil
libertarian in an era dominated by the Menzies Government, the Labor Party split
and the Cold War. Widely respected for his advocacy skills and forensic insights,
J.V Barry is today regarded as the intellectual founder of the criminology discipline
in Australia.
This 30 minute slideshow covers the launch of Professor Mark Finnane's authoritative
biography J.V Barry: A Life, held at the Supreme Court of Victoria in November
2007. The book was launched by Bar member David Neal SC, and features speeches by
Dr Neal, Mark Finnane and John Barry's daughter Susie, as well as archival photos
courtesy of the National Library of Australia.
